Manavgat

manavgat fallsManavgat is located about 72 km to the southeast of Antalya. The Manavgat River has a famous waterfall near the town. The town Manavgat was founded on the plain that lies on both sides of the Manavgat River. Manavgat city center is about 4 km far from the shore of the Mediterranean Sea.

The huge influx of tourists visiting Manavgat every year is changing the shape of traditionally conservative Manavgat; there are now many bars, discos and all kinds of youth culture which 20 years ago would have been unthinkable. The small but cosy villages of Kumköy and Ilica on the coast are particularly lively.

With 64 kilometers of hot, sunny and sandy coastline and with a long river and a famous waterfall, Manavgat is an important tourism center in Turkey. There is plenty of accommodation on the coastline of Manavgat and many places to explore including historical sites, rivers, streams and caves. There is also the Mediterrenean Sea itself with the stunning experience of swimming from fresh water into the salt water at the Manavgat rivermouth.

The foundation of Manavgat is not known for certain, but it is estimated to be between BC 200 and BC 150. As understood from the early documents, cargo and human transportation had been made on the Manavgat river, from the very first centuries till recent years. Manavgat has become a village of the Turkish Republic at 1923.

The Northern part of Manavgat is bordered by the Taurus Mountains covered with thick forests. The Manavgat River, which flows through the town, gives the plain fertility and richness. The Manavgat Waterfall and its delta are the most important natural richness of Manavgat.
