Marmaris was a Carian
city which has a history that goes back to the 3500 BC. The city with
the ancient name of Physkos is an important bridge to Rhodes and the
Aegean Islands. The ruins of the antic city can be visited at Asartepe,
about 2 km. north of the city center. There are various legends
about the roots of the name "Marmaris" but the first record of the name
can be found in Heredot's writings. Marmaris Castle, built during
the Ionians and rebuilt by
Suleyman the Magnificent, has a great
panorama of Marmaris.
Along the promenade,
Marmaris marina is a busy yachting center and also has a nice sight. The
"Yacht Charter Show" organized in Marmaris every May, is an enjoyable event
with captains and crews coming together with nature-lovers,
along the impressive southern coasts of Turkey. The
Blue Voyage trips can be started from here and a fascinating trip along the
elegant coastline of the Aegean can be made.
A citadel built in the
16th century by Suleyman the Magnificent, an Ottoman caravansaray of 1545, and
the Mosque of Ibrahim Pasha, dating to 1789, are some interesting
buildings in Marmaris. The Ataturk Park, on
the eastern side of Marmaris, is another location that should also be
visited with a lovely beach ideal for swimming.
The ancient Amos city
is about 20 km to Marmaris. The small city has a well preserved
theater, a temple and some statues all surrounded by the walls of the
ancient city. The theater has an amazing view of the Rhodes
Island. conditions of 3 different rent contracts were found at
Amos. Near Amos, you can visit the Cedrae Islands. The
island set consists of 3 islands with Kleopatra Island being the most
famous one. It is said that Kleopatra and Mark Antonius used to
swim in this interesting small beach. The sand of the beach has
been brought here from North Africa and this type of sand can only be
found in North Africa. Also some other ruins of an Agora, a
theater can be found in the same island.
The Phosphorus Cave
near Marmaris, is a natural cave with a turquoise water that resembles
an aquarium and can be reached by boat. It's great swimming in
this cave. Turunc is a small fishing village with a magnificent
bay surrounded by a hill of pine trees (Click
for Turunc Photos). The village is 21 km to
Marmaris city center. All kinds of accomodations facilities are
available. Only 6 km to Turunc you can visit the untouched
Kumlubuk Bay. Between Turunc and Marmaris, you can visit
Icmeler.
Icmeler has nice canals pouring to the Icmeler Bay and a magnificent
beach (Click
for Icmeler Photos). The Turgut Waterfall is about 35 km to Marmaris with
a splendid waterfall falling from 10 meters height and some restaurants
around.
Marmaris today is a
popular holiday resort with all these scenic points, supplemented by
numerous facilities, including modern accommodation, restaurants, cafes,
bars, and others. The beautiful boutiques, markets and bazaars provide a
good deal of shopping opportunities which will give a last colorful
aspect to your vacation. You may choose from excellent souvenirs among
the Turkish handicrafts here, and do not forget to buy "Cam Bali''
which is a tasty pine-scented honey, locally produced in this area of
pine forests.
You can also make a
daily tour to the Greek Island Rhodes. Tour boats take off at 9:00
in the morning from Marmaris and gets back to Marmaris at 17:30.
